Some curling hair tips PLEASE!?

Ok, i just recently got a curling iron, and it is a size 1 1/2. i thought it would be good for my hair. cause i have longish hair, layered in the back, side bangs and if i don't straighten it, it can be kinna puffy. So what i did was wash it, straighten it, and then i tried curling it. But it didn't curl very well, so i waited like 2 days and curled it again. That time it curled better, but it wasn't really a curl, it just like cured at the end. Do any of you guys have a curling iron that size, if you do please tell me how to use it so that it actually curls your hair and not just the ends. Or do you think i should return it and get a 1 1/4. I don't feel like retuning it though, so please tell me how i can deal with the one i have, please and thank you!!!Some curling hair tips PLEASE!?
ok, seeing as you have quite a chunky iron it can be harder to create curls but as you have long hair it shouldnt be too hard.

start off with spraying heat protection (its a must) next spray in a curling lotion or spray ive used loreal studio curling spray it looks like this: http://images.buzzillions.com/images_pro鈥?/a>

just spray some of this in your hair before blowdrying and curling, its kind of like a hairspray anyway, next glide the curling iron down the hair (like a straightener) before starting to curl this should make it slightly smoother, then wrap the hair around the curling iron and hold for about 30 seconds, the longer you hold it the tighter the curl will be. also once youve released the curl spray it with either some more of the curling spray or hairspray it will last longer. i hope this helps.

if not then watch this video:http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YhFUDYcClR鈥?/a>Some curling hair tips PLEASE!?
well is it a really high end curling iron? if its not then you aren't going to be able to straighten it and then curl it. a high end curling iron is going to get super hot where it can counter act the straightening but if you just got a cheaper one like at walmart or Sally's then curling it after you straighten it isn't going to work.

is it possible just to smooth it out while your curling it? instead of straightening it first
Don't straighten it first.Or if you have to, just do it a little to flatten it down but when you curl it should automatically sort out the puffyness.
I have found that placing a fork into an electrical outlet always produces a nice curl no matter what your hair style. Good luck honey!
just take a shower and brush your hair while it is wet. then let it air dry or blow dry it. when curling make sure all of your hair is under the clamp. this should help
I bought a 1 1/2 also, and it was a waste because it would curl it but didn't stay. I bought a 1in. and it stays better but i'm going to return it for a 1/2(although i love the curling iron, its great). I have naturally curly hair and do the same technique you do (washing, straightening, etc.) I hear that not washing your hair holds the curl better.

You're best bet is to return it, and it also depends on if the iron was of good quality. Sally Beauty has good irons, and so does Ulta. Mine is ';Helen of Troy'; and it was a fair price- $30 and i love it.
Your problem is that you are straightening it first. That never works because you are doing to much styling to it. Try drying your hair with a round brush and then curling it. I personally find that curling irons work really well for some hair and not for other hair. I have tried several times to curl mine with a big barrel curling iron and it won't curl. I have naturally curly hair and it wont even curl. I like hot rollers. Using those is so much less work and they curl hair that is stick straight. You could always try those and take your curling iron back if you are really dissatisfied!
